But now, once at the end of the ages, he has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. … so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for him he will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. Hebrews 9:26-28.
What a tremendous difference there is between the first and the second coming of the Lord Jesus! During the various ages man’s sin came to light more and more clearly. Therefore Christ came “at the end of the ages” to put away sin through His self-sacrifice.
But soon He will return to grant all who wait Him complete freedom. He bore their sins at the cross once for all time, and His atoning sacrifice is valid and final (Chapter 7:29; 9:12; 10:10). So at the Lord’s return, for which we are waiting, it will no more be a question of sin. He is coming to lead us into the whole scope of the great salvation which He accomplished (Chapter 2:3).
